Since its foundation in 2001 the Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office made some remarkable achievements:

  • HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office desks have been established in all sub cities
  • All kebeles (the lowest level of city administration (203 offices)) found in Addis Ababa have been establishing a Kebele HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Council. Each council consists of 30 members drawn from different organizations like CBOs and other respected members.
  • Support and training was given to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control councils at all levels (sub city and kebele). As a result the main activities undertaken by the sub cities /kebeles were:
    • Awareness creation and sensitization workshops
    • Distribution of IEC-materials (information, education and communication)
    • Provision of care and support to PLWHA, orphans and their families
    • Training of CBOs and others
  • About 120 projects from amongst others NGOs, Anti AIDS clubs, individuals and private organizations were funded in the past few years. Main areas that were covered by these projects were:
    • Care and support
    • Research
    • Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
    • Prevention
  • Community planning manuals and implementation manuals were prepared by the office
